Are wine magazines dying off?

Writer's Digest (12/08) had an interesting article concerning whether magazines, in general, are dying off or not.

In 2007, 715 new magazines were launched, substantially higher than in 1991, though a couple years ago there were about 1000 new magazines launched. Still, 715 is a very substantial amount. That sure does not sound like a dying industry.

In addition, overall magazine readership has increased 5% in the last four years. Again, that is certainly not a sign of a dying industry. Now, newspapers are not doing as well, with a decreasing readership of 3-5%.

It does not appear that blogs or the Internet are taking much, if anything, from magazines. Many magazines have online adjuncts which seem to only support the magazine. If anything, it is newspapers that appear to be suffering from the competition of the Internet.

Fascinating.

I suspect that newspapers seem temporary. When the day is done, so is the news and the paper it's written on.

Magazines aesthetically are stronger, more compact, less time dependent, than newspapers so more likely to be bought, subscribed, and kept around.
It is down to production costs. You can knock out a magazine for very little money these days. Most no longer employ full time staff apart from management and sales/marketing hence there real term price on the news stand has been dropping and dropping in relation to newspapers and we all need something to bury our heads in, on the train traveling to work.

I agree with your points about the differences between magazines and newspapers.

I actually read another stat recently that it costs about $5M to launch a magazine with a circulation of 50,000. At least to me, that sounds like a significant investment. And with all those new magazine launches, billions of dollars are being spent on new magazines.
For some time now, there have been discussions, often heated, how wine blogs are going to take down the established print wine media. Yet most of those discussions have been long on opinion and short on actual fact. I certainly agree that blogs have a growing influence, but I don't see wine magazines disappearing any time soon. Just the fact that magazine readership has increased over the last 4 years indicates to me that magazines are here to stay for quite some time.
I think the die-off in magazines (in any area) will be on the low end. The small-circulation, limited-distribution magazines are the ones that will be replaced by blogs and on-line publications. The big books – Wine Spectator, Food & Wine, etc. – will continue to exist, and probably thrive, for a long time.

I was in the magazine publishing industry (editor of sports and agriculture magazines) many years ago, and in today’s world I can’t imagine starting a new print publication. I really feel that the future of wine and travel publishing (and maybe in some other areas) will be in eBooks or eGuides. One of the members of this site – WineTravelGuides – has a good example of where I see the publishing industry going.

Finally, from a writer’s standpoint (I made a living as a freelance magazine writer for several years), I think it’s getting harder and harder to become published in traditional print magazines – another reason for the proliferation of blogs. (Although I do wish that more blog writers could actually WRITE. I wish more bloggers would learn a bit about grammar and spelling and proofreading.)
