The Voice of the Wine Industry

I think that the picture becomes more clear when we share specific examples of being denied access to special bottles of wine or one you had your heart set on receiving, only to be stonewalled due to HB 429.

Prior to HB 429, I would read a good review or might have tasted a wine I really liked at a restaurant, then I would go to Wine-searcher.com and find it, wherever it might be in the U.S. and place an order. Now I can't do that. I am limited to Illinois wine shops who are limited to what distributors in Illinois choose to carry. Meanwhile these same Illinois shops are happily shipping out of state to folks in other states who do the same search for a wine and order it from them. Makes no sense whatsoever.
I agree Matt, here at the club Im at the mercy of 2 distributors. One of the companies sales person knows only about 3 wines because she gets a nice spiff to sell them. The other company has a fair selection but most wines on the list are common to most any Trader Joes, or World Market, and I am charged more and have no way around it. So what's next? I remember driving across the Mississippi river in College to purchase Beer that wasn't available in Illinois. Are we at that stage with wines?
I am really upset that we do not have freedom of choice in Illinois when it comes to purchasing wine. This country has always championed the principles of free trade across the 50 states, not protectionism. The concept has been--and should continue to be--that if an item is legal, it can be bought and sold anywhere in the country. If Illinois (or any other state or municipality) can ban consumer purchases of wine from out-of-state retailers, what's next--sweaters, computers, books? Sadly, the only people benefitting from HB 429 are the wine distributors of Illinois, who continue to hold a monopoly on wine sales in our state. And in so doing, they are guaranteed the sole and supreme right to determine what you and I drink! I used to work for a distributor, and have observed that in general, it is profit margin, not quality, that determines what they sell to restaurants and retailers, and thus to us. We need to step up and have our voices heard!

Looking for low end and high end bottles. State-side or abroad. I would be happy to answer any questions via…

Looking to buy cheap wine for China

Hello!
