Jiles - you say "Every year a maximum limit is agreed before the harvest so that supply of grapes is kept in alignment with the demand for the finished product in the marketplace."

and

"the grape growers (the vignerons) whose livelihood depends on selling the maximum amount of grapes that they can to the negociants."

How do they change the amount of grapes?

I see this dilema every year in some other wine regions, too. Why not a free market? Supply & demand with prices going up & down according to stock? (1,000 btls at $50 each is the same as 1,250 btls at $40 each).

What about quality versus quantity?

Some wineries of the world ask their suppling growers to reduce quantities to increase quality and pay by the acre, not by the ton.

If the growers can't make a living via quality, shouldn't they give up the free homestead that they inherited and go to college for nursing or accounting? (That sounds harsher than I meant it).

Furthermore, one can not increase sales & profits indefinitely, but if they save for a rainy day, they can always weather a storm, n'est pa?

Lastly, they just increased the hectares in the appellation, most probably with inferior terroir. How can a country that makes the best wine be so nuts?

PS: In case I can not get to Champagne, let me know when are you coming to the East Coast. A few seminars with you and your better half would be a hit!

The success of an intensive program rests with the strength of your long term memory. Most memory theorists advise multiple reviews over a period of time. I've forgotten the formula, but something like once a day for a week, once a week for two months and then once a month for a year. Apparently it has much to do with the way the brain stores and file information. Short-term intensive bouts suggest to the brain that the information is only for immediate use. That said, what I love about intensive programs is that one can give the topic full attention in the moment and stay really focused.

Aha - I conflated level 3 with unit 3.

I standby my comments. If feasible, weekly classes are a bit better than an intensive week of classes. I've had friends do both and the weekly students had the time to address their weaknesses.

China Market

Our company is opening channels into China for exporting wine. We are able to tap an unique market for distribution but also delving into the regular market. High volume is mandatory, but we have an order for a smaller exploratory shipment. If you have a slate of bottles that you think would work well, please contact me if your wineries want to take part. Looking for low end and high end bottles. State-side or abroad. I would be happy to answer any questions via…

Hello!

We are currently looking for any Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot wines that fall in the $1-4/bottle price range for a client that wants 1 small order and one much larger bulk order.

If anyone with bottled and labeled wine in this price range and is interested in exporting to China don't hesitate to contact me. Also, if you just have general questions,…
