Migrating your blog address/platform

I'm seriously considering moving my blog.

Has anyone done this? I'm interested in possibly purchasing wannabewino.com and setting it up there.

My problems/concerns are that I don't want to lose the work I've done on blogger, I am a technotard in that I know little to nothing about coding (it literally took me two months to figure out how to get the code for the Toast This! button on my posts....), and I don't want to lose my readers.

Anything else I should be worried about? Any advice/suggestions/help/etc? What is your experience with this?

Thanks!

Okay, I own wannabewino.com and wannabewino.net

Joel, not so much just for the domain name, though that's part of it (I'm tired of the .blogspot thing) but I also want to be able to change the template to not a standard blogger template and do a bit of a change-up of the layout...it's looking tired and boring and I've been at it for a year and a half now :)

I have known people who have left the blogspot name, but still changed their template and colors.

The one hiccup I have heard repeatedly is that exporting the reader comments from Blogger is nearly impossible. On the good side, getting the actual blog entries appears to be reasonably straight-forward.

This is a good start:

And, realizing that you already bought the domains, GoDaddy is definitely the way to go. I currently host a domain from mediatemple, and I am quite happy with it. I also have a site hosted at Laughingsquid.com which I am also happy with. On the whole, though, I would probably go with mediatemple.

This give and take is an excellent example of the ~mutual benefit society~ dimension that OWC offers. User forums do this, of course, but OWC provides such a service plus, potentially, so much more (as a virtual trade association).

great question as I too am thinking of doing this and the excellent and talented Ryan "more handsome than George (Clooney)" Opaz at Catavino has volunteered to assist if I have trouble (hopefully this smarmy stuff will help too)

I already have my domain - I realised that as I changed my 'name' to The Wine Conversation from the original Wine Culture (hence the original http://wineculture.blogspot.com) the links back are quite confused and various.

Good Luck!

Hi all, I have parked my blog for the moment at Typepad and I am having some trouble with them hence a strong interest in moving to Wordpress or anywhere else. I bought four variations on my domain name and tried to get Typepad to have all of them click through to the blog. Three weeks and nothing doing. Any ideas?

I've spent 15+ years in the IT industry, so I do remember some of the technical days. And I would NOT recommend moving your entire blog.

Instead, I would second the recommendation to create a new blog on your preferred platform, and point to that blog with your new domain name(s) and from a closing post in your "old" blog. Migrating your comments, pics, etc. would take forever and probably be more trouble than it's worth.

Having said that, the Blogger templates can be changed by using CSS code. There are lots of free templates available on the Internet - could be something to try before moving the blog. Blogger isn't perfect, but theoretically you could have 1 million hits per day and they could support it as there is no service limit...

Boy i should have read this a few hours ago. I did move the entire blog (only 33 posts and no images) to Wordpress and left a link on my Friendster blog to the shiny, new one. Since I haven't done much to get the word out on this blog there were no comments to move. my domains are with GoDaddy and I am in the process of having them forward to the blog.

Good news all. My blog is up and running at chronicnegress.net. I bought other variations on my domain name and have them forwarding to the Wordpress blog. Would love any feedback you can offer.

I know this is about 1 month late but I've just learned that if you use a "new" (beta) Blogger template, you can import your posts, pics and comments into wordpress by literally pushing one button.

Just a thought - there seem to be waaaaaay more cool wordpress templates than blogger templates...

If all you're concerned about is the domain name it is easy - buy the name and a site at GoDaddy.com, and you don't even need to "migrate" your account. You can continue to edit, create new posts, and everything else with Blogger, but it will come through GoDaddy as your domain name. Look at the political cartoon site I manage (and draw for sometimes), http://www.lefttoonlane.com, which I actually manage at http://lefttoonlane.blogspot.com. In fact, if you type in the latter, it redirects you to the former. You also get an email account with your domain name, for me, for example, dhonig@lefttoonlane.com.

Once you have it, you can redirect it through Blogger under "Settings," Advanced Settings.
