Technology spreading the word of wine through a world of wine drinkers

Randy Hall

What do you want out of this group?

I ask this mostly because I'm curious, but also that I think there is something missing in this group, some raison d'être that hasn't been uncovered yet, but with conversation we can arrive at what that missing piece is.

So I ask: what do you want?

  • A way to discover new and interesting businesses in the Wine 2.0 world that you would like to work with? Perhaps we can profile one business a week through an interview process...
  • An exchange of ideas and concepts in wine and technology? Something where we might uncover new markets and avenues for increasing not only individual market segment share, but grow the total available market?
  • A forum to hone your marketing plan for the outside world, where you'll get frank and honest feedback without feeling threatened?
  • To disband and go back to old ways of thinking? Sorry, I had to add that as the zinger.

Please add your thoughts to this list to help guide me as I start to chart the course through uncharted territory.

All the three serious ideas are excellent! I'd love to see a profile of different companies and what they do, or wine-related sites that use technology in some original way.

I'd add:

List the tech blogs you read, podcasts you follow? Or just export and upload your file of RSS feeds!
Any URL of anything you think is of interest within the stated scope (wine+tech)
Is there innovative media? Are there any videos that are not talking heads or cute teenagers harvesting grapes?

I'd love to work together as a group to solve some of the major challenges we tech companies have with helping the wine industry - e.g. standards, web services, et al.

Paul,

I love this idea, and I guarantee you that we will work on this. I think the problem for wine tech companies of processing the raw data that comes from all the different corners of the wine industry is perhaps the biggest single problem that we have, and it touches everybody.

I think having an industry-agreed way to interchange data would raise productivity (and the bottom line) of just about every wine tech company (and several non-tech companies).

Yes, all three ideas sound good to me. I mainly just joined this group to keep my finger on the pulse of the Wine 2.0 movers and shakers. Exploring the possibilities...

I think the first three ideas are all great ways to leverage this forum and will look forward to the creative discussions in the future! The last idea, well, it's great if you are a certain Russian dictator but...;-)

So, I will start putting together a somewhat pre-determined set of questions in an interview style. I'll communicate with each of your individually, get your answers to the questionnaire, and then format the result and post it either here or in a blog post (for wider dissemination to the OWC community).

Sound good?

I'll fill out a questionnaire :)

The technology help us to reach more clients and more potential business, but at the end, the winemaker, the general manager and the commercial director of a winery or any wine related company wants to touch or see the service working live more than in "the web site", they want to talk to the creators of the new technology or be recommended by someone they know....or just talk to a representative.

I work in Chile and Argentina developing projects and creating a big platform for foreign business that is integrating southamerica (uruguay, chile, argentina, brasil....soon peru and bolivia)....not only in wine related topics- also tourism and social responsability projects.

If anybody has interest in developing business down here....there is a great potential for growing and do business, specially, considering the high number of foreign investors are buiding wineries and small/medium size companies.....I can tell you, is much easier...but we go back to the beginning, they want to talk in person and interact with people.

Still believe that get global but finally work local is the only way.

Agreeing on standards and promoting their adoption and sharing knowledge and experiences for me

I'd like to see a group effort to look at the online wine world more closely. Tom does small survey's, various others try to rank blogs, and the rest of us speculate based on our limited experience/sphere of influence. I would love to get a large scale, across the board survey up on sites of bloggers/wine retailers/other publishers. If we're all about improving online wine experiences, then lets work together to better define not only our demographic but our users too. Thoughts?
