Many people assume it is a sweet insipid wine (perhaps because so many wines are thought to be Riesling and are, in fact, insipid). And because Rieslings don't sell, the vines are grafted over to another variety that can command greater prices and sales. In addition to New York, there are some good ones from Washington State. But they are hard to find (and NY wines are almost impossible to find here).

When I do tastings of Rieslings, from the US, Germany and Alsace, people like them. But they still don't buy them.
